* Yellow Jersey for the General Time Classification.
* Green Jersey for the General Points Classification.
* White and Red Polka-Dotted Jersey for the Best Climber Classification.
* White Jersey for the Best Young Rider, for riders no more than 25 years old in the year of the race.
Participation
22 teams of 9 riders will be invited to take part in the 2004 Tour de France. These teams will be selected in two rounds in accordance with the International Cyclist Union new regulation which applies to the three Major Tours: 14 teams automatically selected at the end on January 31st, 2004 after the registration of new sporting groups, according to the UCI classification drawn up at the end of the previous season; the organisers will then attribute 8 wild cards on March 1st, 2004, among the teams which will have applied for the Tour

Intermediate Sprints |
For the General Points Classification, Intermediate Sprints take place during the straight stages, i.e. 3 sprints in the 1st to 9th stages and then 2 sprints in the 10th to 20th stages.

Prize Money |
A total of 3 million euros of which 400,000 euros are for the winner.
