Noirmoutier en l’ile

9,592 inhabitants currently live on the island of Noirmoutier. Formerly known as Her Island, it boasts more than 40 kilometres of gently sloped and finely sanded beaches. Thanks to the work of monks and the great dedication of the Jacobsen family, the soil was drained out in the 19th century, and salt marshes were set up as well as a harbour. After a long decline, salt marshes once again flourish on the island… as well as the renown Noirmoutier potato. Noirmoutier stands out as a most charming island. A form of seaside art de vivre lingers there, with resorts recalling the quaint charm of the early 20th century and quiet shores dotted with windmills and sheds. Be sure not to miss the Bois de la Chaize, the Passage du Gois and the Castle.
