Lézat-sur-Leze
Situated on the Lèze River, LEZAT has a population of 2,200. It was built around a tenth century abbey to which the Count of FOIX entrusted the relic of Saint-Antoine the Hermit. Gifts from powerful families, pilgrims and a spring supposed to cure the shingles brought the abbey regional fame.
The village has kept nice vestiges: half-timbered houses, arches, a gothic church, the abbey palace (now the Town Hall), brick houses in Toscan hues. The local economy, long based on agriculture, has diversified.
Today, the town attracts people from Toulouse (but 40 km away) who appreciate the general atmosphere as well as the economic and social diversity. Be sure not to miss the rising bell-tower as seen from Route 919 and the splendid Pyrenean mountains cape to be admired from the Guard Mills, between Catalonia and Bigorre.
