Issoire
Alongside the volcanic foothills of Mount Dore and Mount Cézallier, at the confluence of the Couze and Allier rivers, sunny Issoire is a gateway to the south (not very far off by the highway) as well as to the National Parks of Auvergne and Livradois-Forez.
Rounded tiles, decorative brick friezes, tan arkose, blue and light ochre facades make up a town of side streets and quaint squares, with a decidedly southern air, under the watchful eye of the 12th century abbey church St-Austremoine.
In the old town centre can be seen various examples of 15th century architecture. The Clock Tower, formerly a belfry, is devoted to Renaissance history. Taking a stroll in the evening amongst the illuminated buildings is quite an experience.
Issoire and the historic Dauphiné d’Auvergne region hold many artistic and historic treasures to be discovered.
