Karlsruhe

For the second time since 1987 the Tour de France is coming to Karlsruhe, birthplace of cycling. With its unique fan-shaped urban layout, its open atmosphere, and Southern European climate, Karlsruhe provides a unique setting for a stage arrival. Nestled in luxuriant nature and a landscape of multifaceted architecture and culture, Karlsruhe embodies a modern way of life. Karlsruhe is young, dynamic, imaginative and above all inventive: it was here that Carl Benz revolutionised the way individuals moved about with his invention of the motor car, where Heinrich Hertz discovered electromagnetic waves, and where the origins of the German Internet lie. Recently, this innovative city, in which the inventor Baron Drais von Sauerbronn created the bicycle in its original form in 1817, has held numerous international cycling events.
