Joost Posthuma

“I didn’t expect this to happen today. I hurt my back in the Dutch championships and I was just happy to be at the start of the Tour de France. I was good in the Dauphine; I was fifth in the prologue and so I know I can go well in this sort of stage.
“I started at full speed and felt good but the last three kilometers were very hard because of the wind.
“I’m really happy. One day in the white jersey is fantastic. It’s good for me and great for the team. We will see what happens in the next stages but I don’t think that I’ll be chasing any time bonuses; I’m not a sprinter and my team already has one of the best in the world with Oscar Freire. The yellow jersey is close, but I don’t think that it’s realistic for me now.â€

Yellow Jersey

For a long time I knew that it would be a short time trial to start the 2006 Tour. I trained a lot on my time trial bike and hoped to be good this day but I never really expected to be able to win. I saw the course this morning and knew that it was something for me.
I had my director in the car saying ‘Come on!’. He was telling me, ‘This is yellow!’
I wanted to empty myself of every ounce of energy and I arrived exhausted but now I have the yellow jersey on my shoulders.
I have a great team here and I hope to hold onto the lead as long as I can.
This is a good start but I still really want to try and win a stage in a sprint.
