Carcassonne
Carcassonne, prefecture of the department of Aude, a city which boasts two monuments listed in the Unesco World Heritage, has a population of nearly 50,000.
Chosen by Unesco in 1997, the medieval city is still lived in to this day.
Honored in 1996, the Canal du Midi harbor is located in the center of town and welcomes many pleasure boats. With the canal (built by Pierre Paul Riquet in 1667), and the banks of the Aude river, Carcassonne is gifted with a most unique setting.
Built by St Louis in 1260 on the left bank of the Aude, surrounded by ramparts, the city center is full of architectural wonders.
Cavayère lake, situated at the foot of the old town, is ideal for swimming and leisure.
An array of cultural and artistic events takes place the year round. Summer is always the high point, with the City and Bastide Festivals, the legendary 14th of July fireworks, the Medieval Festival, bullfights and the Spanish Week...
