Alain Gallopin believes that Carlos Sastre has the potential to rise from second overall to first if he handles the final climb well in stage 17.
“Yesterday we sacrificed the team ranking because we asked both Schleck and Vandevelde to put in a big effort because we realised that there was something worth working for in the general classification,†said Gallopin.
“Now our goal is to get the yellow jersey. We were on the attack with Carlos Sastre in stage 16 and today I believe that it’s in T-Mobile’s interests to be aggressive. They have the most solid team in the race and Kloden,a strong time trial rider, needs to get ahead of Pereiro today if he wants to win the Tour.
“For the moment, the most obvious podium in Paris is Pereiro, Kloden and Sastre.
“Anything is possible on the Col de Joux-Plane. It’s a really tough climb… we saw that in 2000 when Armstrong lost time on his main rivals. If Sastre is good on the final ascent, the world is his oyster.â€
