  The Alsatian stages
Strasbourg

Strasbourg welcomed the first alsatian stage of the tour in 1919. One year after the end of wwi (1914 - 1918), it symbolised the rebirth of the race and the return of the alsace region to france.
Six tour winners belong to the city’s past-winners-list: thys (1920), Frantz (1924), Leducq (1929), Robic (1947), Merckx (1971) and Hinault (1985). Special reference must also be made to the belgian rider emile masson, who won a stage in 1922, followed by his son, ranked equal with weckerling in 1938.

Four tour winners won a stage in strasbourg: Frantz (1925), Hinault (1981), Fignon (1992) and Armstrong (2000).
The city hosted the start of the tour in 1959 and in 1971.

Colmar

Le Ballon D’alsace
Although it is technically located in lorraine (on the border with the haut-rhin), the ballon d’alsace is an integral part of any text on the alsace region.
It was climbed for the first time in 1905 and most recently in 2005 and four tour-stage-finishes took place at its summit: 1967 (1st: aimar), 1969 (1st: merckx), 1972 (1st: thévenet) and 1979 (1st: villemiane).
