15:54 - Capecchi drops Pinot off

In the downhill, Pinot finds it difficult to follow Capecchi. The French neo pro did most of the work in the final part of the climb but doesn’t look as easy in the descent.

With 20km to go, the group of Moreau is 1.50 behind Navarro. The peloton is at 3.40.

Navarro is first in Chamrousse but he has suffered a lot in the final kilometres of the ascent.

Navarro remains solo 1km away from the top with 50 seconds advantage over Pinot and Capecchi.

Pinot does all the work with Capecchi on his wheel. But Navarro stays in the lead 2.5km before reaching Chamrousse.

At half way in the climb, the peloton led by RadioShack’s Sergio Paulinho and Chris Horner is 2.30 behind the leading trio formed of Pinot, Martinez and Capecchi.

14:59 - Moreau is familiar with Chamrousse

Christophe Moreau who has gone clear off the peloton is familiar with the climb of Chamrousse. This is where he successfully defended his yellow/blue jersey in the 2001 Dauphiné against Pavel Tonkov who was only one second adrift on GC.

Only six riders in the lead as Tankink can’t follow his former breakaway companions.

Situation at km 97: 7 riders in the lead, followed at 2.20 by Delage and Kern who have been rejoined by Kessiakoff (Garmin), Steensen (Saxo Bank) and Moreau (Caisse d’Epargne). Peloton at 2.35.

In today’s L’Equipe, David Millar describes the Criterium du Dauphiné as a race where it’s “all or nothing”. “I might even not be here anymore on Sunday if it doesn’t go well”, the Scot said. The Dauphiné is the last race of the first half of the season he’ll try and win. “At the Tour de France, I’ll ride in support of Tyler Farrar for the sprint and Christian Vande Velde for GC”, said the captain of Garmin-Transitions who assumes a large responsibility in the running of the American team. Millar is currently 4th of the overall classification of the Dauphiné 1.56 adrift Janez Brajkovic.

The advantage of the seven breakaway riders keeps going up: 3.40. The highest ranked of them on GC is Eros Capecchi, 39th at 6.48.

On the sprint line at Le Bourg-d’Oisans, the peloton is 3.15 behind the seven breakaway riders.

12:44 - In the press today

In Le Dauphiné, Rémy Di Gregorio (Française des Jeux) who finished 19th in Risoul, explains that mechanical troubles disturbed him yesterday. “My bike was catastrophic”, he declared. “I couldn’t change gear uphill. It prevented me from attacking. It’s a pity. My legs were good.” The climber from Marseille is expected to take his revenge today.

12:43 - Start proper given

The start proper of stage 5 has been given at 12.44.

12:38 - Jersey holders

For the second day in a row, Janez Brajkovic (RadioShack) wears the yellow/blue jersey of the race leader, He also leads the points classification with one point more than Geraint Thomas (Sky) who therefore keeps the green colours. As Bram Tankink (Rabobank) retains his lead in the king of the mountains competition, the three jerseys holders are the same as yesterday.
Brajkovic was impeccable in defence of his position against Alberto Contador in the uphill to Risoul. He has even increased his lead as his runner up is no longer David Millar (Garmin-Transitions) at 36 seconds but Tejay Van Garderen at 1.15. The neo-pro from HTC-Columbia is the big revelation of the race so far. Contador is third at 1.41 and Millar fourth at 1.56.
In the points classification, Brajkovic has 65 points, Thomas 64 and Contador 58.
In the KOM classification, Tankink leads with 23 points, ahead of Guillaume Bonnafond (Ag2r-La Mondiale), 22, Cyril Gautier (Bbox), 20, Inaki Isasi (Euskaltel), 18, Nicolas Vogondy (Bbox) and Brajkovic, 15. Today, the col du Lautaret allocates 10, 9, 8, 7, 6 and 5 points to the first six riders at the top, Chamrousse rewards the first ten riders with 20, 18, 16, 14, 12, 10, 8, 7, 6, and 5 points respectively.
