Van Hummel steals the show on inaugural stage

Kenny van Hummel is the winner of stage 1 of the Arctic Race of Norway. It was even a 1-2 for Vacansoleil-DCM with Barry Markus passing Thor Hushovd at the very end. The Norwegian champion was highly expected as a winner in Bodø but the bunch sprint came at the end of a very demanding race due to cold and windy conditions. After claiming his first win of the season, Van Hummel will start stage 2 with the leader's jersey but Hushovd who crossed the line in fourth place is far from having said his last word.

Bodø

The City of Bodø welcomes Arctic Race of Norway 2013

The City of Bodø most heartily welcomes the Arctic Race of Norway (ARN) 2013 to the county capital of Nordland hosting the first leg of the ARN 2013. Situated at 67* 17' N Bodø is the southernmost town north of the Arctic Circle and in summer we can, if the weather permits, enjoy the Midnight Sun. In winter we often can experience Aurora Borealis or the Northern Lights.

Twice Bodø has received unwanted international attention. In 1818, the so-called Bodø Incident, an unfortunate smuggling affair caused diplomatic complications with England. And on the 1st of May 1960 the whole world became aware that an American U2 spy plane heading for Bodø had been shot down over the Soviet Union, endangering world peace.

Today Bodø has a population of almost 50,000 and is the second largest town in Northern Norway – still growing by more than 1% per year. Maybe little compared to your big cities, nevertheless we enjoy the growth of a modern town.

Tall cranes and a lively activity on numerous building sites make the skyline of Bodø today and in the coming years projects tottaling more than 16 billion NOK will be realised.

We like entertaining guests and look forward to welcoming Arctic Race of Norway 2013 to Bodø. Now we hope that the ARN 2013 in the most spectacular surroundings will give us the attention we really want; inspiring all the world to visit Bodø, Salten and North-Norway.

You are all very welcome!!!

Welcome to Nordland, where you can experience the world's most beautiful coastline.

The coastline of Nordland and its 18,414 islands is not as inaccessible as you might think: You can reach Nordland from numerous airports, via excellent roads that run along the shoreline or over the mountains, by car ferries and express boats, and innumerable graceful bridges that blend beautifully into the landscape.

Traditional and modern coastal cultures live side by side here. The striking and fascinating history is so much part of the landscape that you can feel it all around you. Yet you can also enjoy modern life in the towns along the coast, bustling with shops and entertainment, giving you the chance to discover local art and culture.

Nordland is a place to meet our culture, formed by nature and the people who live here. It's a place of peace and harmony, yet brimming with activities. Whether you come for an active holiday or choose a slower tempo, we guarantee you experiences that you won't forget in a hurry.
