On the day that the race leader lost time to some general classification rivals, he also increased his advantage on the rider in second place. Chris Froome would not finish with the front group. There would be changes to the top 10. The rider in second overall would lose time... but Alberto Contador is still the closest challenger after a dramatic day of racing to Alpe d'Huez - and onward, up and over the col de Sarenne, down into the valley and back to Alpe d'Huez for an encore performance that yielded some of the most exciting kilometres of racing in the 100th Tour de France. A sporting view
The capital of the Hautes-Alpes is located on the Napoleonic route that goes from Golfe-Juan to Grenoble. A commemorative plaque on the rue de France marks the place that in 1815 the Emperor stopped on his return from the Island of Elba. In the previous century, in 1692, the town has been set alight and destroyed by the Duke of Savoy's troops. Today, with more than 50% of the Department's turnover, 2,000 businesses and 20,000 jobs concentrated for the most part in the tertiary sector, Gap has a bustling centre and is the business capital of the Alpes de Sud. Close to the city centre, the Domaine de Charance has been classified as a ‘remarkable garden' and you can admire a collection of roughly 1,000 varieties of rose and many hundreds of fruit trees. It is also home to the National Alpine Botanical Conservatory and in the Spring hosts the International Blacksmiths Competition. Throughout the summer many cultural events will punctuate the life of the city, such as Estivad, new music festival, the International Folklore Festival and Gap en Fa Mi Sol.
