The Walloon capital of crayfish was also famous until the 19th century for its back marble. The town developed around the castle of Franchimont, the military, judiciary and administrative centre of the area. In 1468, 600 brave locals left Franchimont for a failed attempt to kidnap Charles de Bold who was ravaging the region. They were slaughtered and the reprisals were terrible.

Château de Franchimont
Built in the 11th century on a ridge closing the Hoegne valley, the château of Franchimont left imposing ruins. Built around a rectangular courtyard, the primitive castrum, still visible, was composed of three wings and a massive keep. Since the 16th century, the castle was not modified and remains one of the rare intact fortified castles of the period.
