Milan-San Remo holder Arnaud Demare showed he was perfectly ready to defend his crown when he won the 148.5-km first stage of Paris-Nice like he did a year ago, ahead of fellow-Frenchman Julian Alaphilippe. While French riders swept the days' jerseys, there was grief for their compatriot Romain Bardet, who was disqualified after being helped back into the bunch by his team car after a crash 22-km from the finish line in Bois d'Arcy. Demare holds the yellow jersey with a four seconds lead...
"We had decided that one of us should be at the front, whoever that was, even if Maxime Bouet and myself were designated. When it started, I tried to make the most of it without any real plan. The goal was first to be in the break, the polka-dot is a bonus, but it's a just reward for a day in the front."
