At the start in Charleroi, Jan Ullrich, who figured among the leading contenders, that day had to test his strength.
Unfortunately, the adventure, as it was for many others, did not reach its desired conclusion. The race, taking off like a shot, like Fassa Bortolo who was pulling the peloton along, left no place for down time for the entire length of the 199.5 km race in the daily programme. Successive breakaways never were able to take advantage of a sufficient advance to snatch a victory at the summit of the Mur of Huy. In fact, the final hectometres decided the race. Rebellin, having already won the Amstel Gold Race a few days before, beat his fellow countryman Di Luca, while already looking ahead to an authentic feat: a first-time triple to be won a few days later in Liege… |
