A transition race in between the Spring classics (Milan-San Remo, Tour of Flanders, Paris-Roubaix, Liège-Bastogne-Liège) and the major stage races (Giro, Critérium du Dauphiné Libéré, Tour de France), the Tour of Picardy is strategically placed in the international cycling calendar.
The race is an important challenge both for “Pro Teams” and “Continental Professional Teams”.
The Tour of Picardy is the fruit of collaboration between the Regional Council of Picardy, the three departments of Oise, Somme and Aisne and the organisers of the Tour de France. Picardy, a land of cycling, has embraced a prestigious race that attracts the cycling elite.
Held over fairly uneven terrain favouring offensive initiatives, subject to the winds blowing over the Picardy plain, the Tour of Picardy is mainly aimed at attacking cyclists, but preserves a balance between flat racers, fighters and sprinters.
Tom Boonen, the last winner, belongs to this race of cyclists, and, like Bernard Hinault, Miguel Indurain, Gilbert Duclos-Lassalle and Alexandre Vinokourov, all winners in Picardy, he has asserted himself as a super champion
